Our policy on the language of service

Jeffery Hale – Saint Brigid’s (JHSB) was created on April 1, 2007, as the result of the joining of two public establishments which, together, have over 300 hundred years of history serving the English-speaking community in the Capitale-Nationale region (Greater Quebec City).

Committed to providing high-quality health and social services in a safe and caring manner, JHSB is a bilingual institution designated to provide all of our services in both the English and French languages.  We realize that assuring services in the appropriate language can have a positive impact on many levels, such as follows:

  • Getting the right service at the right time;
  • Speedier and more accurate diagnosis;
  • Following treatment plans;
  • Lowering cost of services, and;
  • A higher level of satisfaction on the part of both client and providers with their care encounters.

We have taken many concrete actions to meet quality requirements in the area of language access and to help ensure that our English-speaking clients and their families feel welcome.  Adopting an official Policy on the Language of Service has helped with the following:

  • Putting detailed operational procedures in place in various sectors
  • Installing bilingual signage;
  • Maintaining a fully bilingual telephone response system;
  • Translating critical patient information, health education and corporate information materials;
  • Developing and revising procedures to address related issues such as the recruitment, hiring and staffing of bilingual personnel, and;
  • Assessing and developing the English language skills of current staff and volunteers.
